What We Do

Through its network of birth activists and professionals, the Big Push for Midwives Campaign meets its PushStates where they are, providing tools and support no matter where they stand along the continuum of organizing their advocacy efforts. Get involved with the group(s) in your state today!

The PushMap

See the PushMap above that shows the 17 states, as well as in the District of Columbia and three U.S. Territories, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Virgin Islands, Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) are at risk of criminal prosecution for practicing medicine or nursing without a license, which drives the practice of midwifery underground and creates barriers to access for women seeking maternity care. Download the PushMap here.

Citizens and birth-advocacy organizations are working together, with the help of the Big Push for Midwives Campaign, to effect change at the organizational, community, and policy-making level by pushing to educate lawmakers about the triple-bottom-line benefits when they choose to pass laws licensing CPMs in every one of these jurisdictions and to incorporate them as maternity care providers at the state and federal level.

The Big Push is a resource for PushStates and Territories to help parse the issues, whether they are working at their Statehouse to pass a bill into law, or PUSHing a state agency to change old or restrictive midwife practice rules. Learn how The Big Push is providing support services and help for the pushing. See the PushChart below on the regulation of Certified Professional Midwives that shows more on the state-by-state picture of CPMs. Download the PushChart here.

As midwifery grows and is modernized across the PushNation, The Big Push for Midwives Campaign and its network of state organizations are working to create a clear path to Certified Professional Midwives for families across the United States. Together, midwives and mothers are working to increase access to CPM birth options, and further remove barriers to evidence-based maternity care.

The Big Push for Midwives Campaign supports its member state organizations and coalitions as they push hard for legal access to Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) and the reduced costs and improved outcomes associated with out-of-hospital maternity care and birth.

Big Push volunteers are the very heart and soul of this national movement. They are so very impressive, for their courage, resourcefulness, and resilience. They inspire others to act, and they are tenacious in their drive for expanding birth options for their communities. Big Push campaign services to volunteers include:
    •    Policy Initiative Support
    •    Legal Counsel
    •    Media and General Advocacy Support
    •    Research and Analysis
    •    Education, Outreach and Advocacy Training, Materials, and Presentations
    •    Coalition Building Within and Across States
    •    Monitoring and Evaluating Policy Environment

In each state, the Big Push works with local midwives, consumers and advocates who know their respective districts well. Together, effective messaging operations are developed, using locally relevant and appropriate messages, and regulation and licensure of CPMs moves forward in new states each year. (It should be duly noted that NO STATE has ever repealed Certified Professional Midwives licensure.)

The Big Push provides high-quality, professional messaging, media relations, and social networking services to publicize the efforts of the campaign nationally, as well as helps states to promote their efforts in local and regional media.

In addition, a rapid response team is in place to ensure that the Big Push campaign and the PushStates can respond quickly to any disinformation from the American Medical Association, its affiliated state associations and other opposition organizations, such as the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Also, the campaign’s Website effectively integrates vital information generated and used by the Big Push Campaign for mothers and midwives, policymakers, donors, and media.
